Chen and deVos present two kinds of perfect worlds, one built on memory and one built on sensation. Digital Exhibition Physical ExhibitionResidency Progress Report https://4444-d.com/Progress-Report Mon, 10 Aug 2020 11:36:48 +0000 FOUR-D https://4444-d.com/Progress-Report Progress Report&nbsp; Progress Report was a month-long workshop devised and run by FOUR-D alongside artist Clara Harlow. The purpose of the workshop was to interrogate the nature of progress — the how, what, and why it takes to implement and accomplish a goal. The project manifested as a series of four workbooks, each investigating, with a mixture of playfulness and seriousness, the concepts of progress and goal setting. A mixture of record keeping, journaling, and thought experiments, the contents of each individual’s workbook were the catalyst for weekly video conferences where participants would discuss with one another different aspects of their successes and pitfalls.&nbsp; As always, but particularly during the circumstances surrounding the covid-19 pandemic, our aim was to find ways to gather community together to find common purpose and expression through a shared practice and language. In this deeply personal body of work, Tucker depicts herself in a beautifully emotive photorealism. A figure of whiteness (rendered in outline) acts as her counterpart: confronting her as her lovers, her teachers, as flowers, as books, in classrooms and bedrooms. Tucker refers to this treatment of whiteness as “dis-representation”, using it to flip the imagery of minstrelsy, with its reduction of blackness to a limited cast of hideous caricatures, onto the white body and institution. Seriously playful and painfully incisive Tucker’s work examines the complications of learning who she is through the eyes of the other, and the struggle of forming her own self despite (and because) of it. The tension in this work lies in the way that Brittany interacts with these figures, which dances, sometimes literally, on the line between intimacy and subjugation. In Squish, two hands tightly hold her face, squeezing and disfiguring it. In I Read the Book On You, a teacher’s hand rests on her shoulder, while Brittany's hand covers the mouth of the outlined white face on the cover. In the corresponding statement to the piece, Tucker writes,&nbsp; “Slavery in America began in 1619, it’s four hundred years later and I’m in love but it’s hard to forgive you. You didn’t do anything. Yet you benefit. Yet I wade through it. I was taught but I could’ve been told, I could’ve been told or I could’ve remembered. I could have lived and died in it but I was taught instead. It’s complicated. But I love you. I love you three-fifths. Devotional, an interdisciplinary exhibition and performance night. The second in a series of shows that seek to string together the written, the visual, and the performative, ISSUE TWO: Devotional begins with a preliminary half-hour reading—during which the audience is asked to engage with a series of writings about each artwork they are about to see—followed by a performative interpretation of the works, and finally the visual works themselves. In the current political and social climate, sometimes it seems as if everything is slipping away. This exhibition is comprised of 30 responses to the questions What are you holding on to? What’s holding on to you? From dance to film to sculpture, the artists in this exhibition use their chosen form to express feelings of longing and trauma. A bisected airplane reveals passengers bored by the constancy of their movement, forgetting that they are suspended in the sky. A woman struggles up a ladder bearing a heavy bundle of rice, which hits the ground only to be gathered again. Small acetate boxes full of sand are symbolic trophies of a captured multitude. Mellon foundation, ISSUE ONE embodies FOUR-D’s initiative to experiment with the formal aspects of viewing visual art and the practice of exhibition. ISSUE ONE explored the connection between written and visual representation, tasking artists to simultaneously compose a piece of poetry, fiction, or essay alongside a visual work. On the day of the opening, the audience was asked to arrive at a specific time and discovered a small room filled with printed books. After an hour of reading, the audience was asked to compare their conception of the written work to what they were about to see, and the visual work was theatrically revealed. were physically unable to complete or to begin a project with no pressure to complete it by the exhibition date. The artworks were installed in their unfinished form throughout the house, engaging with the architecture of the “unfinished” building. Nicholas Chiarella created an otherworldly fortress in the basement of the home, which hosted an ongoing performance project to create a dictionary of glyphs. Doug Campos debuted a bilingual zine about the relationships that queer Lantinx have with the secular and religious rituals of their families. exhibition held in response to the proposed funding cutbacks to reproductive rights organizations. Consisting of over one hundred artists and ultimately generating over $5,500 for the Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood, NASTY WOMEN was a rallying cry for artists and their communities to enact political values. Democratic and performative by design, purchasers of the work were asked to remove the work from the walls themselves during the run of the show to be packaged for shipping, resulting in a constantly changing exhibition based on sales. 02:53:42 +0000 FOUR-D https://4444-d.com/SOFT-BELONGINGS-1 SOFT BELONGINGS ABOUT: Navigating the line between art and retail FOUR-D was invited by Hudson River Exchange to curate a selection of artist’s multiples. SOFT BELONGINGS focused on a sense of contemporary art and design that bases itself on the ideas of the soft and the small. This branch of design emphasizes (in palette, material, and shape) the graspable and the mutable as counteraction from the rigidities and definitions of cultural structures and identities. Aiyana Jaffe, in her soft works, created pillows that shape themselves around the user, inviting a tender relationship of touch and play. Atsuko Bauman in her miniature sculptures created objects so small that in order to be examined must be held in the hand, brought close, permitting only an intimate exchange. All of the artists in this show created “products” that manifested discourses of fluidity, of “self care”, and of comfort.
